To Dad

storyboardtest001Dad 3

Just wanted to wish a Happy Father’s Day to my daddy-o. I chronically suck at getting cards out on time, but hey, at least you’ll get a post on the day-of, right dad? :)

Thanks for providing for our family for many years and for always being such a hard worker. Thanks for singing me to sleep with your guitar when I was little, and helping me to appreciate music like I do. Thanks for wiping off the ants and for nicknames like Bugbites and for writing lots of letters from Egypt.  Hope today is a good one for you.  Love to mine and all the other dads out there!

Spotlight

I didn’t post yesterday. It was weird. But I just didn’t really have anything to say, and my house was in need of some attention. So I cleaned and organized and exercised, and I mostly stayed off the computer, and it was… nice. But don’t worry. There won’t be much of that nonsense around here, except on weekends sometimes.

Also, you should check these people out.

Stephanie is the brains behind Big Mario Life, a super cute lifestyle blog by a California lawyer turned photographer (and a GOOD one!). Stephanie’s about page goes to show how clever and awesome she is (especially the Harry Potter reference), and personally, I’m obsessed with her guinea pig, Molly.  This is one blogger you will want to get to know!

Julie’s blog features yummy recipes, her hilarious pup The Captain, and real-life type posts like today’s. Drop her a line of encouragement, will you? We’re all in this together!

Lemon Tree, my Ass.

IMG_8873-2

What could be construed as fate or serendipity has played a big role in my life in the past few years. Especially when Matthew and I first met, one thing after another kept happening to us that seemed to really cement our future together (read our love story and you’ll get a little taste), and it always seemed too, well, coincidental, to be just a coincidence. We attributed our fate to God and the “law of attraction,” which both of us were big proponents of, especially then… back before life beat us down to ghosts of the souls we once were.

I kid.

But it IS funny how much crap has gone down since our fairy tale beginning. I think they call it… real life? Things I’ve blogged about, and things I haven’t.

Anyway, one lovely, fateful event occurred when Matthew and I were house hunting here in Austin. Long story, but we’d almost moved to California before deciding to live in Austin, and while we were house hunting in Cali, there was one home in particular I’d fallen in love with. I loved the inside, too, of course, but one little perk of the property was a glorious lemon tree out in the backyard, complete with lots of plump, ripe lemons. I thought it was a sign, since I’d always wanted a lemon tree.

Well, that house didn’t work out, and for good reason. We were supposed to be in Austin.

While on the house hunt here, we were finishing up a long list of places to see when we arrived at what would become our current home. It was one of those where you walk in and just immediately get a good feel from the place… like, yeah, I could totally live here! We loved the flow, the open floor plan, the potential. And when I walked into the kitchen a second time after touring the house, Matthew beckoned me over to a fruit basket beside the fridge. Inside that basket was a lemon with a note beside it that said, “from the lemon tree out front.”

“If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is.” Said Matthew. And I cried.

Obviously,we bought the house.

And you know what? In the two and a half years we’ve lived here, that damn “lemon tree” never produced one bloody lemon. Not even a little green bud that looked like it might someday become a lemon. We laugh about it all the time, and usually curse at the “lemon tree” when we walk by it.

This morning I was out watering the fake lemon tree, and I was thinking about life and how symbolic this silly story is. Sometimes things work out, and sometimes they just don’t. Sometimes something you think is going to be perfect winds up being flawed, like most things are. When it comes to fate and serendipity, I think we all have a lot more of a hand in things than we think. We assign our own symbolism to what happens to us in life. We shouldn’t just sit back and try to decipher meaning out of the arbitrary. We decide.

And I’ve decided that the lemon tree was a lesson. Sometimes life makes big promises, and fails to follow through with them. (or perhaps you simply had misguided expectations?) Sometimes people hurt you, and people die, and you find yourself lost for a little while. Sometimes things need to happen to get you to where you are, even if they’re disappointing or unpleasant. But you can’t sit around and wait for the lemon tree to produce.

I suppose the lesson here is this: when life doesn’t give you lemons, plant a different bush. Or better yet, go buy some dumb lemons from the grocery store.

The end.

The Color Issue

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Today I have Aarean here from Color Issue, which is a really fun blog featuring colorful finds from all around the web.  As a definite color enthusiast myself, I always enjoy what Aarean curates or creates for her readers. Today she's making a few simple suggestions for brightening up a drab day. There's a definite psychology behind color, and wearing it can instantly brighten your mood. Enjoy!

Hi! I'm Aarean, the author of The Color Issue and a die hard color enthusiast! If there's one piece of advice I'd give for anyone feeling a little "out of sorts" when it comes to their style... it would be to ADD COLOR! Here are a few of my favorite "frumpy remedies" that always seems to work like a charm...

1. Change those flats or tennies to a fun wedge or heel (this will make you feel and look more feminine in seconds)
2. Add a colorful scarf (they make any outfit look put together)
3. lastly slap on some lipstick (like my mom always said "lips don't like to feel naked" haha)

**on a sidenote if you're feeling really ambitious try painting your nails, that always seems to get me out of my drabby rut--I have done a few really fun nail tutorials you might want to check out HERE, HERE and HERE!

Shades of Blue

I’ve been a busy little worker bee editing pictures today… how adorable is this family and their varying shades of blue?

Most photographers these days cringe at the thought of a matchy-matchy family session worthy of the famed awkwardfamilyphotos.com, but a more modern, fresh take on matching is wearing various shades and prints in the same color group.  I loved this session, and all the blue, and all the cuteness. Thanks for being awesome subjects Renea, Bryan, Junior, and Austin! :)

That last picture was taken at the very end of the session. The perfect time to call it a night. :)

Monday blurb

Feeling so thankful for my friends on this sunny Monday… what. a. weekend. Three of my best girl friends (all of whom were in our wedding) came up for a “slumber party,” because that probably won’t happen again for God only knows how long (one of them joined the Air Force and ships off to California at the end of the month). We played with makeup and went out for pizza and had way too much rum and coke followed by hangovers from hell (OK, so that was just me) and watched two full seasons of Sex & the City and ordered Chinese takeout and didn’t get out of our PJ’s until 5 PM on Sunday, and really… what more could you ask for?

I should also mention that I won us 10% off dinner for spelling “zucchini” correctly on spelling bee night at Home Slice. I was proud of that accomplishment, and felt it should be noted here.

A few scenes from the weekend…

Friday, Again?

This week fleeeew by. Yep, so quickly that it constituted a few extra e’s in flew. But no really, how is it Friday already? I guess this is what happens when you take two trips in three weeks, and you’re still playing catch up.

So, you guys have any amazing plans for the weekend? I have some of my favorite girls coming to stay with me as a last hurrah before one of them ships off to California for Air Force training (tear…). Should be an epic weekend.

Here’s a little new reading for you! Enjoy…

The Mrs & The Momma is a blog by the lovely Kristen, a lady I had the pleasure of meeting in person at the Texas Style Council.  The Mrs. & The Momma is a life and fashion blog, and Kristen singlehandedly proves you can be a Mom (of FOUR children!) and still stylish and smokin’. Get to know her a bit better here, and if you’re in the Austin/Buda area, you may also want to check out her wardrobe consulting services…
